PRO Number (PRO)

Definition

A PRO number is the tracking number an LTL carrier assigns to a shipment. The driver usually applies it as a barcode sticker at pickup, and it follows the freight through every terminal to delivery. It is the reference the carrier's tracking page, invoice and proof of delivery all use.

  • Bill of ladingshipper or broker number
IllustrationThe carrier PRO number ties its tracking page, invoice and proof of delivery to one shipment; the bill of lading number is different.

Why it matters

The PRO is the only number the carrier's own systems recognize everywhere. A bill of lading number belongs to the shipper or broker; the PRO belongs to the carrier. Until someone has the PRO, tracking a shipment means calling the terminal, and customers ask for it within hours of pickup.

PRO number versus BOL number

The bill of lading number is created when the shipment is booked and identifies the order. The PRO is created by the carrier, normally at pickup, and identifies the freight in the carrier's network. A broker's tracking tools often work from the bill of lading number and translate to the PRO behind the scenes. Some carriers accept pre-assigned PROs so the number is known at booking.

Why the PRO can lag

Between the driver leaving the dock and the freight being scanned at the origin terminal, the shipment may not show in tracking at all. That gap is the carrier's data feed, not a lost shipment. Promising a customer a PRO at booking time sets an expectation the carrier may not meet until that evening.

Using the PRO after delivery

The PRO ties together the delivery receipt, the invoice and any claim. When a carrier bills a reweigh or an added accessorial, the PRO is how the charge is matched back to the original quote and booking.

How the agents handle it

Customers ask for tracking as soon as the truck leaves. TIO's trucking agents watch each booked load and email the pickup notice, status changes and the proof of delivery in the same thread.

Frequently asked questions

What does PRO stand for?

It is usually traced to "progressive rotating order", the sequential numbering carriers gave their freight bills. Today it simply means the carrier's tracking number for an LTL shipment, typically 9 or 10 digits.

Where do I find the PRO number?

On the barcode sticker the driver puts on the freight and on the bill of lading copy left at pickup. Your broker or carrier can also give it to you once the pickup has been scanned.

Does a full truckload have a PRO number?

Usually not. Truckload shipments are tracked by the bill of lading or load number and by contact with the driver or dispatcher, since the freight stays on one truck.
